What is a Steel Pail Lug Cover?

What is a steel pail lug cover?  Our open head steel pails are sold without the lids.  Depending upon the UN designation of the pail, these pails will either take a dish cover and a lever locking ring as a closure or they will take a lug cover.  Lug covers are steel covers with steel tabs as shown in the picture to the right.  These steel tabs must be crimped down to secure the pail lid to the pail body.  To accomplish this, you would need to use a crimper.  Crimpers are sold separately and you would need to know the gauge of the cover to purchase the proper crimper.  Generally customers who use steel pails have already purchased their own crimper.  It would be more cost effective for smaller customers to purchase a steel pail that can use a dish cover, as crimpers are most often fairly expensive.

Examples of Various Lug Covers

Closing instructions are provided on the paperwork for each specific lid.  As an example, the closing instructions for our CSCC-80-01X30 lid are as follows:

USE WITH CSCP2-80-01X30 PAIL.

CFR178.2(c) NOTIFICATION:
LINE UP JAWS OF THE CLOSING TOOL WITH TABS OF THE COVERS.
PRESS THE HANDLES DOWN COMPLETELY TO THE STOPS.
TURN THE TOOL 180 DEGREES AND REPEAT
THE LUGS SHOULD BE COMPLETELY TUCKED UNDER THE CURL OF THE PAIL.
