Why use an Epoxy Phenolic Lined Packing Group I Steel Drum

Among the steel drums we stock, is a 55 gallon tight head, or closed head, buff epoxy phenolic lined drum.  This is a Packing Group I drum with a UN rating of UN1A1/X1.8/300, however it can also be used for Packing Groups II & III,  good for both hazardous and non-hazardous product. This is an ISO drum with “W” body hoops. These W shaped rolling hoops help to improve vacuum stability and reduce packaging weight.   The top of the drum has one 2″ and one 3/4″ Trisure steel plug with irradiated PE gaskets.  The interior of the drum has an .8 MIL Buff Epoxy/Phenolic lining.  This lining provides a non reactive barrier between the container and your product.

Some products in the food and chemical industry may have a negative reaction when coming in contact with steel.  This could result in contamination of your product.  The epoxy phenolic coating in this drum can help to avoid that problem.

Other important attributes of this drum are that it is:

  • chemical resistant
  • used in the food industry
  • good for detergents
  • good for latex paints.

The exterior of this drum is black with a white top.  Shown below is a picture of the plug removed from the drum.  You can see the buff epoxy phenolic lining on the interior of the plug.

As always, it is the responsibility of the shipper to ensure compatibility of his product with the container.
